A Word from the Pastor...

It’s sometimes said that the two things we talk about in the church the most are money and love. I don’t think the former is accurate, but the latter certainly might be. And perhaps that’s because, as 1 John 4:16 says, “God is love”. God is the very essence of love so why wouldn’t we “hammer it home” about the Love of God, especially given to us through His Son, Jesus Christ?

The challenge however, is that we tend to like the safe and predictable type of love. It’s easy. It’s comfortable. It doesn’t hurt as bad. But what about “reckless” love? Webster’s Dictionary defines the word “reckless” as: marked by lack of proper caution, careless of consequences, irresponsible. I believe this is the kind of love Jesus represented. His love broke boundaries, showed up in surprising places, encountered unlikely people, went past cultural norms, and transformed lives. And guess what, it’s all still happening today!

Starting Sunday, August 11th we will begin a new six-week sermon series called “Reckless Love”. It will be based on Tom Berlin’s book by the same name. Berlin writes, “Whenever we walk with Jesus, we have experiences that transform us. He takes us out of our comfort zones. Without apology or warning, he expands us, makes us afraid of what might happen, and then shows us how love is properly done. He is not content with sedentary faith.”

To love like Jesus loves is to experience a reckless love. During this joint sermon series with Concord UMC, we will ask ourselves just how deep our love for neighbor really goes. Together we will explore how loving neighbors not only leads to better relationships with family, friends, and others, but also leads to a deeper love of God. In Reckless Love, we will learn the ways Jesus’ care for others disrupted life, and leads us to share the good news the way his disciples were taught. This series will give you “the opportunity to consider your life, and learn how loving the people around you will completely renew your faith and give you a new experience of loving God.”

In addition to the sermon series, Pastor Todd and I will also be leading a study through Tom Berlin’s book. See the information on the next page and join us. We will also end the series with our annual Villa Rica First/Concord Tailgate Party on Sunday, September 22!

Come and be with us as we learn to love recklessly!

Blessings,

Pastor Erik

“Do not waste time bothering whether you “love” your neighbor; act as if you did. As soon as we do this we find one of the great secrets. When you are behaving as if you loved someone, you will presently come to love him.” - C.S. Lewis
